Ladakh, known as the Lama Land is the land known for its huge lama population. Ladakh is the second highest populated place in the world. The monasteries in Ladakh are either of the Mahayan or the Hinayana sect of Hinduism. The monasteries of Ladakh have given Ladakh a new meaning and a distinct beauty.

Few of the Monasteries in Ladakh are
Hemis Gompa Monastery - Built in 1630, Hemis Monastery is the largest monastery in Ladakh. It belongs to the red sect, Brokpa. Hemis is an impressive and intriguing monastery, lying of 45 km south of Leh. This monastery is different from the other important monasteries of Ladakh. The Hemis Monastery celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava, every year in the month of June-July. This two-day festival enlivens the courtyard of the monastery with great pomp and show.

Namgyal Tsemo Gompa Monastery - The Namgyal Tsemo Gompa was built in 1430, and contains a three-story high Buddha image. The monastery also contains ancient manuscripts and frescoes. One can have a breathtaking view of Leh.

Sankar gompa Monastery - Located about 2 km from the town centre, the Sankar Gompa belongs to the Gelukpa order. The gompa has an impressive image of the Buddhist deity Avalokiteshwara Padmahari or Chenresig. The image has 1,000 arms and an equal number of heads, which is very unique to this place.

Shanti Stupa Monastery -
Built by a Japanese order in 1985, this Shanti Stupa was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama. From the top of this monastery one can view the distinct locale lifestyle. This stupa is located at a distance of 3 km from the Fort Road.

Spituk Monastery - On the hilltop near the Indus River, about 18 km from Leh is the Spituk Monastery. This was founded in 11th century by Od-De and was named Spituk (meaning exemplary) by Rinchen Zangpo (a translator), saying that exemplary religious community would rise. In the initial stage, the gompa belonged to the Kadampa School, but during the reign of King Gragspa Bumide, it was included in the Gayluk Pa order. The monastery celebrates Spituk Festival from 17th to 19th days of the November every year.

Buddhist Monk at Spituk Monastery The monastery has a collection of ancient masks, antique arms, icons and several thankas.

Thiksey Monastery - At a distance of 20 km from Leh is the Thiksey Monastery, an impressive structures with one of the finest examples of Ladakhi architecture. This Gompa is situated on the top of the hill and forms part of Gelukpa order. Paldan Sherab nephew of Sherb Zangpo, founded Thiksey monastery.

This 12 storey monastery complex houses several stupas, statues, thankas, wall paintings, swords and a large pillar with engraved Buddha's teachings. Sacred shrines and many precious objects are also seen there. From 17th to the 19th day of December, the monastery celebrates Thiksey Gustor (festival). The main prayer hall has a 15 mt high seated Buddha image.

Alchi Gompa - The Alchi Gompa lie on the banks of the River Indus. Dating back to thousands of years, the monastery houses several; miniature sized pictures of Lord Buddha.
