Kedarnath TempleSituated in Uttarkashi district of Uttaranchal, Kedarnath is very close to the Indo Chinese border. Kedarnath nestles in the picturesque locales of Garhwal Himalayas which is 3783 metere above the sea level.

General Overview
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (the cosmic light), located in the north Indian state of Uttaranchal. Considered to be one of the most sacred towns in the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath is amongst the most venerated by Hindu pilgrims in the region along with Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedranath is positioned amidst the striking mountainscape of the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,584 m and at the origin of the river Mandakini. Kedar is a Norther name of lord Shiva, the protector & the destroyer to whom the place is dedicated and hence the name - Kedarnath.

Located in the Rudra Himalaya range this ancient and magnificient temple is over thousand years old and is built of massive stone slabs over a large rectangular platform.

The present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. The inner walls of the temple sanctum are adorned with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. A large statue of the Nandi Bull stands as guard at the outside the temple door. A conical rock formation inside the temple is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form.

It is very cold in the winters with the ground being covered with snow. In the summers, the mercury barely crosses the 20°C mark. Kedarnath experiences about 150 cm of rainfall during the monsoons and so the best time to visit is between May and October. Kedarnath is near to Rishikesh (234 km) and Dehradun (250 km).

Important Information
With the arrival of winters in the month of November, the holy statue of Lord Shiva, is shifted from Garhwal (Kedarkhand) to Ukhimath, and is reinstated at Kedarnath, in the first week of May. It is at this time, that the doors of the temple are thrown open to pilgrims, who gather from all parts of India, for a holy pilgrimage. The shrine closes on the first day of Kartik (October-November) and reopens in Vaishakh (April-May) every year. During its closure the shrine is submerged in snow and worship is performed at Ukhimath.

Places of Interest
Gandhi Sarovar - Gandhi sarovar is a small lake from where Yudhishthir, the eldest of the Pandavas, is said to have left for heaven. It is about a km trek from Kedarnath.

GurikundGaurikund - This is the base point for a trek to Kedarnath & serves as a roadhead. Gaurikund has a hot springs (with medicinal values) & a temple dedicated to Gauri.

Vasuki Tal - This extraordinary lake is located about 6 km. from Kedarntah, at a height of 4135 m from the sea level. Surrounded by lofty mountain peaks, the lake offers an amazing view of the Chaukhamba peaks.

Sonprayag - At a distance of 20 km, at the confluence of the Son Ganga and Mandakini rivers, where there is a diversion for Triyuginarayan is the Sonprayag.

Gupt Kashi - Gupt Kashi is about 49 km from Kedarnath. The place is famous for the temples of Ardhnarishwar and Vishwanathji.

Ukhimath - Ukimath is located about 60 km from Kedarnath. This place is known as the winter home of Lord Kedarnath temple.

Panch Kedar - The five most significant temples of Lord Shiva in Garhwal Himalayas.

The temple is situated at an altitude of 3,581 mt. Kedarnath is accessible after a steep 13-km trek over a paved path from Gaurikund. Untrained persons are likely to take all day for the walk. One can take lunch halfway. There are places on the way like Janglechatti, Rambara and Garurchatti where one can rest a while or spend the night.

By Road - Gaurikund is connected by road from Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun and other important hill stations of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions in Uttaranchal / Uttarakhand.

You will not face any problem in Kedarnath as far as your stay is concerned. Tourist Rest House, GMVN from UP Tourism Accommodation are available. You may also find Private Hotels and Dharamshala and Temple Committee Guest House. Local eateries/dhabas which offer only vegetarian food.
