Location
Shimla is situated in the north-west Himalayas and is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh in North India. Shimla is 18 sq km mountainous region lying at an altitude of 2,213 meters. ![]() General Overview Situated at an altitude of 2, 213 meters above sea level, Shimla form one of the best hill resorts in India. The capital city of Himachal Pradesh is easily accessible through all the major cities and is just 343 kms from Delhi. Thousands of years ago, Shimla was a small village which was discovered by the British in 1819. In 1830, the local Raja was persuaded to part with the land by the British and the settlement became the subcontinent's most fashionable summer resort. It was declared summer capital of India in 1864. After India's independence, Shimla became the capital of Punjab till 1966, when it came under Himachal Pradesh. Places of Interest The Mall - The mall is one of the major shopping centre of Shimla. The mall has number of restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, Post Offices and tourist offices. One of the famous Gaiety Theatre is also located here. If you just want to relax and pass away your time, then Ridge and Scandal point are the two main meeting point in Shimla.
