Location
Shimla is situated in the north-west Himalayas and is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh in North India. Shimla is 18 sq km mountainous region lying at an altitude of 2,213 meters.

General Overview
Situated at an altitude of 2, 213 meters above sea level, Shimla form one of the best hill resorts in India. The capital city of Himachal Pradesh is easily accessible through all the major cities and is just 343 kms from Delhi. Thousands of years ago, Shimla was a small village which was discovered by the British in 1819. In 1830, the local Raja was persuaded to part with the land by the British and the settlement became the subcontinent's most fashionable summer resort. It was declared summer capital of India in 1864. After India's independence, Shimla became the capital of Punjab till 1966, when it came under Himachal Pradesh.

The climate of Shimla varies from 10 - 11 degrees in winter to maximum of 25 - 26 degrees in summers.

Places of Interest
The Mall - The mall is one of the major shopping centre of Shimla. The mall has number of restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, Post Offices and tourist offices. One of the famous Gaiety Theatre is also located here. If you just want to relax and pass away your time, then Ridge and Scandal point are the two main meeting point in Shimla.

Church on the Mall Shimla Christ Church - This is one of the second oldest church in Northern India. The church is quite majestic in appearance. The glasses used in Church are stained which reflects faith, hope, charity, patience and humility.

Jakhu Hill - Situated at a height of 8000 ft, Jakhu Hill is the highest peak which is just 2 kms from Shimla. Jakhu hills offers panoramic view of the town and have snow covered Himalayas. Jakhu hills have an old temple of Hanuman which is home to the countless monkeys.

Prospect Hill - Devoted to Kamna Devi 15-minutes walk from Boileauganj on Shimla-Bilaspur road. The hill is situated at an altitude of 2,155m offers a spectacular view of the area.

Hiking - You can enjoy Hiking and Climbing on Jakhu hills over Shimla. Situated at 2455 altitude, Hiking enables you to view the archectural charm of the city as well adore the surrounding beauty.

Camping - Shimla also give good camping opportunity. It provides a perfect getaway to Kinnaur and Spiti.Camp Blue Pines near Mashobra is an adventure-cum-trekking based gateway from Shimla. Connectivity
By Air - Shimla airport is 22 kms from the main city and is connected by flights from Delhi and Kullu. The other nearest airport is at Chandigarh which is more easily accessible by other major airports of India.

By Rail - Shimla has a narrow gauge railway line on which Toy Train runs from Kalka to Shimla. The train cruises its way through valleys and beautiful landscapes at a very slow pace making the journey very pleasant. From Kalka one can take trains to other parts of India too. The Toy train from Shimla is of two types - one is the normal multi coach train and the other is the single car train, which has a glass roof giving an enthralling experience during the journey.

By Road - Shimla is well linked with all the major cities and towns ( Punjab, Haryana , Delhi and Chandigarh) .
